My conception of great spiritual teachers is that they tend to arise in times of great social chaos, which seems to typically come in the form of a social binary (eg, men and women, left and right, christian and jew, black and white, raider and settler, etc), and this is usually based on not just a disagreement but a difference in methodology. The left and right brained groups become so one-dimensional in their thought that they lose the capacity to understand how the other side is thinking.Anyways, these spiritual teachers are capable of integrating these sides again, which restores order and leads to a period of prosperity. This isn't just one of those 4 generation cycles, as the prosperity seems to last for hundreds of years. At a certain point, the message of the original teacher is dogmatized, which means it continues to followed by the letter of the law, but not the spirit of the law. This then starts a slow descent into the division that requires another great teacher to come along.I've not heard a lot of people speak of the great teachers of the past along these lines, although I'm almost certain that's what they must have been doing.
