Saturn was to compete with the newcomer PS1 and N64, while Genesis was the "big two" along with SNES, but then Saturn was like some more niche thing out of the competition completely like Jaguar or NeoGeo. The somehow faded into a much more niche spot that generation, didn't even seem to try to maintain popularity with obvious things like a new Sonic title let alone other trademark series, and much like NeoGeo seemed to focus on a Japanese based "arcade at home" experience. I was about 10 during this time, every single person I knew had either PS1 or N64, not one person my age at all had a Saturn or even seemed to mention/talk about it
