X-Men was inspired by the civil rights movement and Magneto is supposed to be Malcolm X, the violent radical, compared to the preacher of equality and non-violence, Professor X (who is supposed to be Martin Luther King Jr). But it seems funny to me that Magneto is based on Malcolm X. Maybe there should be an arc where he converts to Sunni Islam, goes to Mecca, and renounces his views that non-mutant humanity was created by Yakub.
I would say mutants work best as a composite of minority groups with concepts lifted from real life but given an interesting twist. However the central idea of mutants being oppressed due to fear is a little...suspect in a logical sense and in a narrative sense. 4chan is the place where the argument of mutants being far more unlikeable and undeserving of the association with the black experience or any minority experience was first heard by me. I understand that and the core of it being that mutants can have vast power that can easily kill people being incongruent with their oppressed status. It leads to the idea that mutants should accommodate themselves to their powers but also fit into the realities of society. Scott's gotta wear ruby glasses all the time. He has to live with wearing them just as humans have to make sure he wears them. So in that sense I think if mutants were characterized more as a disability that then rapidly becomes a superhuman ability in certain circumstances. That is shown here and there. A black guy automatically isn't carrying a bomb on his back with a lighter, waiting with a lighter if anyone gets too close. But a mutant....might be. That's kinda why I want an alt-universe AU where Xavier and Mags are government workers who lead an agency that tracks mutants and as they learn more and help more, they begin to diverge but more subtly and more gradually. They prioritize different ideals in their eventual schools. But their intial work means that the government and flatscans are more understanding and aware of mutants and thus are not cartoonishly evil which is saved for the Purifiers and other such groups.And there is less chance of a mutant blowing up a town and creating an easy dilemma for the writer to make a gorillion crossover events from.
