reality is, "going against the establishment" have never been a "cool thing" at least for the vast majority of people
you all have this idea that "young people are against the establishment" cuz you are fantazising a past that didn't really exist and imagine as if all the youth back then were rebels and were all fighting back the mainstream or something, the truth is most were okay with "the establishment" or at least weren't rebels
most young people since always, even tho they might have some type of rebellion, follow whatever trend is popular, follow their own people's culture without really questioning it, and if the government does something they think 'well I guess this is how it is now and it is fine'
this doesn't mean rebellion isn't popular, of course it is and especially with the youth; through out history there have always been alternative looking people with their own subculture, but even amongst these most aren't extremists or like real rebels acting "against the establishment" it's mostly just some subcultures different from the norm just for the sake to be different, perhaps some type of rebellion "against the establishment" but in a minor way, usually because the "system" or "the establishment" failed them in some way or don't feel entirely comfortable in it or to just be inside some group they percieve as cool and badass for their looks and aesthetics, cooler than the lame norm or something
these include punks, goths, metalheads, emos, hiphopheads, people into "the hood" or whatever, even fucking 4chan or tumblr or all these curonically online groups like weebs, furries, trannies, the alt-right, etc.
