I'm not sure that had much to do with it. I joined SL during the Scruffening and was part of the group whose threads in question got deleted on sight. That is, after all, what the Scruffening was: droves of generals getting purged off the board for topics that were seen as beacons for rulebreaking content.

But during that time - even though we were hounded and stalked by the last tryhard remnants of SL trolls, even though we got turned away from places as the internet's broad anti-pony sentiments leaked into SL - that very specific accusation never came up once in memory. You'd think if it was a prominent thing in people's minds, it would have been thrown in our faces at least once, but it never came up. Usually if we were turned away, it was because a group of cartoony avatars was seen as a troll group.

Not to say you weren't right to be grossed out by the people you saw, but I think your experience was a very specific one, and not really representative of the broader anti-pony mindset.

Pony in SL has always reflected the state of the broader pony fandom, which is itself kind of a microcosm of society in general. Such-and-such group is seen as invasive or toxic, and even if those are gross generalizations, differences in culture ensure that the disparate parts will never really vibe. You see it in the relationship between the /mlp/ side and others, in SL, at conventions, on social media... It's not a new dynamic, as we were getting banned from SL places simply for being 4chan-adjacent back in 2013; but it's a schism that is now very in-the-open, very normalized.

These days I think it's more about our relationship with the past than anything else, with each part of the fandom fanning its own particular embers about what they believe made pony great. And if you're fanning embers, you've a very keen desire not to see them snuffed out, and will act as such.
