There's a strength to both. Nobody needed to know anything about James Bond when they filmed Dr. No in 1962. He worked for MI6 and had a license to kill. But 40 years later things were getting too wacky, too indulgent, too dependent on silly gadgetry and dumb setpieces. They readapt the very first Bond novel and reboot him as a new minted agent, an experienced solder that can kill in cold blood but not ready for the two-faced and double-crossing nature of espionage work, 007 for the 21st century and the War on Terror.

People point to Brutal Doom and the 4chan shitpost but I feel like it's also as much a victim of video games obsessively developing their settings for the sake of prestige. Doomguy was barely more developed than Mario, now he had to be like Master Chief and Marcus Fenix, lore and backstory that existed at the periphery of "gun shootman," to justify why he could do all this stuff. On the other side of things, his earlier contemporaries, the rebooted Lo Wang and BJ Blazkowicz don't do that, very much in the "keep it simple" mold. Yes the game does give attention to their backstories but very little of it is relevant to gameplay. BJ spends the first part of Old Blood half-naked and no justification is given to physical abilities and walking around with an entire armory in his ass. Lo Wang is a corporate samurai who spends his money on stupid shit and shaved his head because that's what heroes in the movies he watched did.

People talk about Doom Dark Age feeling like a rebranded Quake in terms of setting. I feel like it'd be more effective if it was actually more evocative of Quake. If Doomguy just showed up fresh off Doom 64 and started kicking ass and the alien kingdom people just thought "hey cool new ally"

Did the Oblivion remake flop? No, and it's the same kind of game. The only difference is Elder Scrolls is more popular than Doom, and popularity defines how well your game will sell.
People only bring up race on 4chan because they want to talk to people of a certain race, but the idea that "X game is for Whites" doesn't exist outside of 4chan.
