I've seen you guys complaining that no one's willing to maintain a snuff thread long enough to get traction.
Well, I'm planning to keep this one going for a while, so put your money where your mouth is, and join in the fun!

Yeah, the brain works in interesting ways.

Well, I have to leave for a while, probably be back in about four hours.
I hope the thread stays up, and I hope 4chan unfucks itself so I can post consistently.

I think this kind of discussion is usually more fruitful one-on-one, as threads tend to get derailed into shitflinging. But I'll try my best.

I'm going to be speaking in broad generalities, and I know someone's going to say "don't speak for all of us" - I'm not, nor do I intend to. These are just trends I've seen. In doing so, I'll be talking far too seriously about our stupid little basket-weaving forum, so if that makes your eyes roll, you can stop reading here. You were warned!

You can look at religion in two different ways. Essentialism holds that religion is "essentially" made of something different, focuses on its unique qualities like belief in higher beings, and goes on to say that comparisons to other parts of culture are pointless. Functionalism is all about the role that it serves in a societal context: its "function."

It's been said that, from a purely functionalist standpoint, fandoms resemble religions in a lot of ways. Fandoms are not just people who like a common thing, after all, but subcultures in their own right. They have their own rituals; their own values about what is and isn't acceptable; their own shibboleths and language; they go on pilgrimages to meet like-minded people; they have arguments about canon vs apocrypha in the central work. Many feel a similar sense of belonging. Reframe it like this, and much of the inter- and intra-fandom strife starts to make a lot of sense. It's sectarianism, it's splinter groups, it's reformations and fundamentalism.

In this light, /mlp/ represents a conservative, fundamentalist strain of the G4 pony fandom - not in the American politics sense, but in the way that it seeks to preserve an endangered culture against threats to its identity.

Much of the board puts importance on simple designs that evoke the show, and a pureness of mare called "snowpity" that's equal parts esoteric sincerity and shitpost. It holds the earliest seasons as sacred, is divided on the middle seasons, and largely rejects the later ones but for a few choice elements. It chants "mares" when it meets up in person, because mares are what inspire this feeling. It has certain OCs it considers important. It has events that bring it together, like Mare Fair and the 4cc, though not everyone participates in these. At the same time, it doesn't shy away from sexuality aimed at ponies, guy-group dynamics, "problematic" ideas, or political incorrectness, because the G4 fandom is ultimately a fandom born on 4chan, and fundamentalism would hark back to that.

These are all tangible expressions of an intangible culture; they are not the thing itself. Board culture is a je ne sais quoi underlying all of that, with the caveat that nothing goes unaffected by the march of time. It's not looking to keep every facet of everything completely identical to what it was, but much of the board hopes to preserve the fundamentals of what made pony great, even if it's looking at them with more modern eyes.

But I am happy, sitting here. Staring at a peaceful 4 chan........A grateful 4Chan..........

Pretty sure she’s made all her socials private. Not sure if she’s still active on 4chan though

It will be so funny when GTA VI is delayed again and all these start breathing in relief and start postponing launch to October and November

The "Islamophobia" after 9/11 was so weird. With the recent election of that paki mayor in NYC people rightly pointed out that most of the muzzies there now, and who voted for him, were in fact let in after 9/11. And that alleged arch chud Bush Jnr made numerous "not all muslims" speeches and press conferences but everyone focused on all his gaffes like saying "crusade"
