4chan ate half my post, but point is I'm kinda in the same situation. The main difference is that I still keep an eye on the thread more often, and that's I'm sure it's mostly shitposting. Looking at it does sap my motivation, but it's temporary at least.
Some anons clearly place a lot less weight on joining in the shitposting for a variety of reasons even if they don't start it, and I can't really blame them too much since not much else is happening a lot of the time, but it does contribute to the bad vibes.

Yeah, but you still need to be aware of malice. On an individual level it's not good to single someone out and say they're being malicious, but on a larger scale it's important to understand bad actors exists and to have ways to deter them. Like in this case, it'd be less about pointing out and lynching/shouting down the trolls and more about finding ways to collaborate that aren't as prone to sabotage. Or that's the ideal anyway. In practice there might not be anything to do about it due to the nature of 4chan.

Hard to say exactly, but it might be the same problem. Like the fetishposting and the unfunny jokes are souring the mood and making anons not want to engage for any number of reasons. At the very least I feel like a lot of it is more mean-spirited, like humor that aims to make fun of a shared enemy instead of stuff that's truly funny because it's clever and unexpected.
